An Effort to Revitalize a Small Town

Years ago, Wanta & Son received a phone call from a possible client, wondering if we could come and save her building, which roof had just caved-in. Located in a small, once-bustling Paper Mill town of Mosinee, this old structure has stood for over 100 years, being at one time, an IGA and a discount store. The owner, Jacquelyn Forbes Kearns, had high hopes of one day turning around this run-down structure and, in effect, turning around this downtown area. That’s how the Mosinee Brewing Co was born. Wanta & Son and Mosinee Brewing worked tirelessly to achieve something truly great in Central Wisconsin. Restoring old buildings and combining them with new, modern structures always present many problems. But the joy we found in this project was all of the creative solutions. Just look at it! We are proud to call them not only great clients, but friends.

Tradition Moving Towards the Future

Stevens Point Brewery, also simply know as "Point Brewery," located in Stevens Point, Wisconsin, is the fifth-oldest privately-owned brewery in the nation. For Wanta & Son, it’s one of our proudest projects. Having worked on a few projects for the Stevens Point Brewery, we’ve learned there’s more to love than the beer! Cheers!

Special Needs Require Specialized Work

In 2009, Wanta & Son was initially approached to construct this 38,613 sq ft building for Zastrow the Beer Man, a beverage distribution company, located in Merrill, Wisconsin. One of the largest challenges of this project was that this project was located over an old gravel pit. Working with the knowledge that future additions could be possible, Wanta & Son organized to fill over a depth of 23 ft. With careful planning and problem-solving, they made sure that it was very compact and there would be no settling after construction. It remains perfect to date.

The owners wanted a newer building to help keep energy costs down. The original building consisted of a 2,128 sq ft high-insulated prefabricated cooler to keep beverages fresh, office space, a truck wash bay, and a repair shop.  The office exterior was of unique design, utilizing masonry wainscot topped with Exterior Insulation and Finishing System (EIFS) wall finishing.  The office interior features above-average attention to detail in the flooring, wood trim, and overall design finishes.

Wanta & Son was able to give Zastrow the Beer Man quality, economical, flexible construction that could be energy efficient and attractive, including forethought for future expansion. In 2012, Wanta & Son completed a 12,525 sq ft. cooler addition to the north-side of the building, rounding the total sq. footage to over 51,000 sq ft. The owner is very pleased with his energy costs being lower in the new and larger facility.

A Local Craft Brewer Looks to the Future

Bull Falls Brewery, located in the heart of Wausau, WI, was growing at a rapid rate and needed to expand to meet their demand. In working with the City of Wausau, Bull Falls Brewery and Wanta & Son designed a building and exterior had to be integrated with existing structure, creating a "flow" with the original historical Ringle Brick Building. The unique lot size also proved challenging, as there were railroad tracks just east of the building and the need for accommodating large trucks.

After careful planning, Wanta & Son was able to deliver a building that fulfilled all their needs - we even left them with the capabilities to easily expand in the future. The new expansion included a cold storage room, gift shop, new brewing facilities, a loading area, and access for tours. Between the transition between buildings, we constructed special brick arches and a metal gate - not disturbing the historical wall.

After completion of the project, Bull Falls Brewery had the space to add canning machinery and was able to meet the ever-growing demands for their German-style beers, and we are proud to watch local businesses succeed. We'll raise a glass to them!

Taking Us to New Heights

Towering high, and keeping them dry, this project in Coloma, Wisconsin had it’s challenges. Being extremely narrow and tall with super-tight efficiencies, Wanta & Son managed to nimbly work around tight spaces.
